When in Nepal Try a Tongba

20150304_194052In Nepal they serve a millet beer called Tongba. It's served warm in a tube and drank through a straw.  Yes, in certain parts of the world you can actually drink beer with a straw. Wikipedia has a good description (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongba)

I opted to try it with a meal of Indian chicken curry and buffalo kothey (fried momos - dumplings).  You can find it in Kathmandu at The Yak restaurant. Tongba to me tastes earthy, with a very strong grain flavor, and just a hint of tartness in the finish.  It's.

I found the Gaia Restaurant in the Thamel district.  A quiet serene little restaurant with a beautiful patio.  A perfect setting to enjoy a Chimay or a Duvel. And who knew that the primordial goddess of the earth would have such good taste..

Beer Sampling at the Qatari Airport

20150301_08121320150301_085849During an 11 hour layover at Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar it became apparent that there is no Qatari beer. Alcohol production is strictly prohibited in Qatar. The airport bar served Heineken, Stella and Balik, a Swiss barley wine. The choice was obvious... I had to go with the Balik.  It has a nice malt profile with oak, and a dry finish.  Should help me nap before the next flight. The airport is modern and efficient.
